Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund is a charitable Trust incorporated by an Act of Parliament in 1981 (Act No.66 of 1981). One of its objectives being to set up and assist the management of higher educational institutes for the upliftment of the secondary and technical education in Sri Lanka. Achieving this objective, with the approval of the Board of Trustees, Hon. Minister in charge of Internal and International Commerce and Food Mr. Kingsley T. Wickramarathne submitted joint cabinet memorandum together with the Ministry of Higher Education to set up SLIIT in 1998 and the approval of the cabinet of ministers has been granted.
Accordingly, the Board of Trustees decided to allocate Rs. 500mn for the initial capital investment for the construction of the buildings and other infrastructure facilities on a 25-acre land at Malabe which belongs to Mahapola Trust Fund.
As an interim administrative arrangement, SLIIT was incorporated as a Guarantee company under the Companies Act No. 17 of 1982 and the following Ex-officio members were the first set of Guarantors and the members of the Guarantee company (SLIIT) which was incorporated in 1999.

SLIIT commenced its operation in January 2000 at BOC Merchant Tower building in Kollupitiya enrolling 400 students for Information Technology Diploma. Later, it moved to its present premises located at Malabe.
SLIIT enters into a management agreement with Mahapola Trust Fund (MTF) and Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) on 19th March 2003. As per the terms of the agreement, the value of the land together with the buildings constructed thereon and all the other resources, equipment owned by the MTF and the net profit generated by the SLIIT keeping resources for further capital development activities shall be transfer to MTF.
SLIIT has been very successful since its inception. Now, it conducts programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. More than 9000 students, including international students from various regions in the world, are enrolled.
