In line with the Budget 2026 proposal presented by His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka, the Lalith Athulathmudali Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund (MTF) wishes to inform all university students and stakeholders that the monthly Mahapola Scholarship allowance has been increased from Rs. 7,500 to Rs. 10,000 with effect from January 2026.

This increase forms part of the Government’s initiative announced in the 2026 Budget Speech to strengthen financial assistance provided to undergraduate students pursuing higher education in Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, the Mahapola scholarship allowance has been revised twice between April 2025 and January 2026, increasing the installment from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 through two equal increments of Rs. 2,500 under the present Government.

The Mahapola scholarship payment is jointly funded by the Mahapola Higher Education Scholarship Trust Fund (48%) and the Government through the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the General Treasury (52%).
